SkinVision App Turns Your Smartphone Into a Skin Cancer Scanner

SkinVision is a unique mobile app that uses your smartphone’s camera to detect skin cancer and keep track of the health of your skin. The app takes into account skin type and your local UV index, and it allows users to send pictures of blemishes and moles in for instant analysis. The app was recently named a finalist in the prestigious 2013 INDEX Awards.

Drastically reducing the cost, time and effort involved in skin care, SkinVision technology uses a proprietary mathematical algorithm to calculate the fractal dimension of skin lesions and surrounding skin tissue and builds a structural map that reveals the different growth patterns of the tissues involved. By processing this map, SkinVision is able to see if a particular mole has an abnormal development, alerting the user if a medical visit is required.

The app is available for Anroid and iOS users, where they can take pictures of moles forming on their skin and upload them. The app analyzes the mole and provides a risk classification, telling the user whether the mole is suspicious or not suspicious and encourages users to see a dermatologist, carefully monitor changes or simply stay alert.
