Tech giant Fujitsu Ltd. just started its own large-scale organic lettuce farm in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture. In a project that blends agriculture, industry and medicine, the Aizu-Wakamatsu Akisai Vegetable Plant grows a healthier, less bitter variety of lettuce that is low in potassium and nitrates. The trial vegetable farm was set up in a clean room of a renovated semiconductor fabrication plant and is totally free of chemicals.
Located in the Fukushima Prefecture, the futuristic Aizu-Wakamatsu Akisai Vegetable Plant is the start of field trials led by Fujitsu Home & Office Services Limited. Measuring about half an acre, it was built in the clean room at a renovated semiconductor plant that is free of environmental contaminants and pests. This means the production is chemical-free and completely controlled using the company’s technologies to maintain optimal growing and atmospheric conditions.
The variety of lettuce grown at this giant Fujitsu space is good for people suffering from chronic kidney disease as it’s low in potassium. It’s also said to be kid-friendly since a low nitrate level makes it less bitter and more appealing to the little ones. While the Fukushima plants are more expensive than the common varieties, they have medical value, can grow year around, are organic and – most importantly – are radiation-free.
