Makeup creates a massive amount of waste, from the packaging to the containers, but what if you could print your own at home with no packaging and no limitations? That’s the idea behind inventor Grace Choi’s Mink, a 3D printer that allows you to pick any color in the world and print it as eye shadow, blush, lip gloss or whatever you need.

Choi launched her idea yesterday on the Disrupt NY stage. According to her, most makeup brands, from Chanel to MAC to Cover Girl, use the same basic substrates. Makeup companies then add pigment, jack up the price, and voila: the makeup you know and love is done. Mink, on the other hand, allows you to choose your own color with your phone or on the internet – you can use any hex value you want – and instantly turn it into makeup. Just send it to your Mink printer and out comes the pigment, which you can then mix into your substrate.

Choi hopes to disrupt the current cosmetics business world by not only allowing the consumer to have all of the control over what colors they can have, but also in how much they are willing to pay for what she believes essentially amounts to the same product no matter where it is purchased. The printer will cost around $300 and should be available later this year.
